Some History Project
one of the most representative architects of his time Joaquin Maria Belda, it is the most important building the late nineteenth century in Valencia. Work begins in 1889 on a square plot enclosed by a perimeter wall with watchtowers at the four corners. Is declared completed in 1901. It is one of the earliest and best examples of Prisons 'model' of Spain, advance nineteenth prison, also translated as construction quality and building type.
The building was created following the current trend in architecture and
functionalism, in which Joaquin Maria Belda adopting a prison system developed in Philadelphia (Cherry Hill), in 1825, with a radial ground system. This type of built, not modular, which feature premium for control and surveillance, are good examples throughout the nineteenth century, around the world. This device model will be phased out with the arrival of the new century, so it is occasionally used, as is the case in Spain after 1900. Impeccable brick building system, with nudity, fitness and lack of concern for appearance, self-confident to the expressiveness of the materials, which gives it premodermas characteristics.
Regarding the implementation of the set built on the plot, it is an exempt building, with space around the element defined by a wall of protection and security. The building consists of a central body for access to the galleries ball acts which are articulated around four bodies longitudinal star located so occupied by galleries and cells, with three spaces of identical geometry and dimensions of the same longitudinal interspersed with these bodies. The Body falls to the street Castán Tobeñas by a body in a "U" that develops around a courtyard garden, this is the original nucleus of access.
Management of built-in moderate volumes and jeraquizada scale-free space with articulated between them, form a unit, which corresponds to the original plan and is considered worth preserving.

I recommend you dig out this page. It tells the cards a Republican prisoner wrote from the model. A curious fact is that the cells came to accommodate up to 16 prisoners. Take a look.
